Alyssa Milano's Cynical Ploy - Merely Human Ministries

Alyssa Milano, the actress who now wishes to be known primarily as an activist for progressive values, recently Tweeted the following:

“Our reproductive rights are being erased. Until women have legal control over own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy. JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back. I’m calling for a #SexStrike. Pass it on.”

The sex strike or sex boycott is not an invention of Ms. Milano. They have a long history. Usually they have been employed to teach men caught in a cycle of violence or abusive behavior that failure to fix that behavior will result in a failure to enjoy sex. It is a calculation that they love sex more than violence.

That is what makes this threat so bizarre. Ms. Milano is rallying men to love sex so much they will demand the freedom to perpetrate lethal violence against their unborn offspring, betting that men will kill their progeny to restore the modern norm of supposed consequence free sex devoid of deeper intimacy and meaning. This is a macabre twist on the sex strike that embraces the lowest imaginable view of men as whole.

Unfortunately, history demonstrates that a fair amount of men exhibit exactly the type of character to make this calculation successful. In embracing this tactic, Ms. Milano exposes an ugly truth about abortion and attempts to leverage it for political gain. Abortion is often less about female empowerment to control their own bodies than it is about male empowerment to have sex with some random women and walk away with no responsibility for the life often created during that act. Hers is a rallying cry to the most base, stupid, and carnal of men to assemble to her side and demand to be able to abdicate every nobler aspiration of manhood in being a good father and husband in order to have more meaningless sex. I guess we should thank her for the honest look at the values of abortion.

Obviously nothing in her threat upsets the pro-life community. We would be thrilled for people to have less sex if it meant killing fewer unborn human beings. We can all hope and pray this cynical calculation fails miserably. On a positive note, there has never been a better time to be a pro-life man happily married to a strongly pro-life woman.
